CHAPTER SIXTEEN

y jubilation and thought that we had a way off the property was short lived. The big black Dodge lurched to a stop just past our house and I frowned at it as if my irritation would be enough to encourage it to go. Sebastian and Jessica ran in from the far field, tools in their hands, worry written across their faces.

“Mara?” Sebastian did a half turn, looking for me.

I stepped away from the side of the house so he could see me. “I’m here.”

He hurried to my side and slid an arm around my waist. “What happened?”

“I don’t know. I guess it just stalled out?”

The three of us stared as the truck engine rumbled for a second as though the driver was trying to get it going again. It coughed, and fell silent, choosing this moment to protest its rough usage over God only knew how many years. With the burnouts and horrid stench of black smoke that had greeted us every morning on the neighbor’s way to work, I wasn’t really surprised. The guy didn’t even let the engine warm up. Just turned it on and hit the gas pedal.

The horde of Nevermores swarmed the truck, scratching and screaming at it. Their nails on the metal made my skin jump and twitch. Nails on metal was not something I would ever get used to.

“What’s he doing?” Jessica leaned forward, taking half a step and then stopping herself.

“I think Mara is right and his truck stalled out. He might be able to get it going again,” Sebastian said.

The back window of the truck slid open, and hands emerged. Our neighbour squeezed himself into the back of the truck bed.

“Hey!” he yelled, “Little help?” He flapped his arms and pointed around him like we hadn’t noticed the Nevermores surrounding him, or like we had some magic wand that would carve a path for him through the horde.

“What are we supposed to do? Walk out there and ask them if they would mind not eating him?” I said, not really expecting an answer.

Jessica nodded. “They let me through once; they’ll let me through with Tom. Or at least, they won’t hurt me and I’m the best shot he’s got. Right, Sebastian?”

He glared at her, and I put a hand on his arm, but it was her I spoke to. “Jessica, you don’t know they won’t attack you. As much as it’s great you want to help him, you could both end up being killed.”

“They didn’t attack us on the back of your property when I was with Sebastian. They just stared at us. Besides. My dad is out there. He won’t hurt me.” Her voice wavered at the end and she glanced at Sebastian. “None of the males will hurt me. I’m sure of it.”

Chills rippled over me at the sudden and vivid picture that rose in my mind. What Dr. Josephson had said on the TV slid into place right with what Jessica had just stated. My mind filled in the missing bits, and the understanding was nothing short of monstrous.
